MARIA PLAZAOLA

Maria started to dance with Gloria and Rodolfo Dinzel in 1993. She later taught at the Universidad del Tango de Buenos Aires and since March 2001 she has shared the directorship of La Academia at El Beso with Susana Miller, where she gives lessons and seminars throughout the year. From March 2002 she danced professionally with Carlos Gavito, with whom she performed and taught workshops in Buenos Aires, as well as on tours and in festivals in Europe, Japan and Russia. With Gavito she performed innumerable times, including at the Palais de Glace in Buenos Aires, and the closing nights of the International Tango Festival organized by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires and the Congreso Internacional de Tango Argentino (C.I.T.A.) in 2003 and 2004. She continues to tour internationally, and has participated in festivals throughout Europe, Asia, the Pacific and the USA. Maria studied anthropology and her work in tango is characterized by research and teaching of the milonguero language, which she learned and still learns dancing in the best milongas in Buenos Aires, although these days she is also happily dedicated to being a mother. Homage to Carlos Gavito In 2010 Maria offers a 2-class course on the material of Carlos Gavito (1942—2005). Maria was Gavito's last dance partner and his close friend. She wrote the following words about her decision to pay homage to Gavito in 2010: Ever since Gavito went “on tour without me” I’ve asked myself often what to do with the legacy he left me. At first it was difficult, I missed him very much, I worried that my work would be associated only with his name and I wasn’t comfortable working on his dance without him. Later – I suppose time helped a lot – I encountered many messages that enabled me to give myself this permission. In his last years Gavito was anxious – almost desperately so – to pass on all of his knowledge of dance and above all his philosophy of tango. Even though I cannot come close to this the way he would have, I believe he had a purpose in teaching me. If any one thing characterised him it was his generosity, in a broad sense, and I don’t wish to keep for myself everything he taught me. I’d like to pass it on to those who are interested and sometimes I feel the weight of this responsibility. The purpose behind these classes is to pay homage, since in 2010 it will be 5 years since he went. To this end the idea is to develop a program based on his technique, which is useful for correcting any style of tango because it focuses on balance, line and posture. To work on his more typical sequences, which help us to listen to the music, and to later dance and interpret it, from a different perspective, and to immerse ourselves in the 'universe' of the pause. And lastly, to be able to appreciate his personal philosophy about tango beyond that of the dance, which allows us to think about tango in a different way. The idea is also to work with the support of audiovisual material from classes and exhibitions that I did with him, along with his comments brought together in the book Yo quería bailar (I wanted to dance) by Ricardo Plazaola. All this in the hope that he, in some place, is happy with the result and that a little bit of his spirit gets into the body of each one of us!

MARIA PLAZAOLA

Maria Plazaola comienza a bailar con Gloria y Rodolfo Dinzel en el año 1993. A partir del 1999 ha trabajado como docente titular de la Universidad del Tango de Buenos Aires. Desde marzo del 2001 tiene su academia de Tango milonguero en El Beso junto a Susana Miller, donde dicta clases y seminarios durante todo el año. Desde Marzo de 2002 ha bailado profesionalmente con Carlos Gavito, con quien ha realizado numerosas presentaciones y workshops en Buenos Aires. Así como giras y presentaciones en Festivales Internacionales en toda Europa, Japón y Rusia. Podemos mencionar entre otras actuaciones en el Palace de Glace, cierre del Festival Internacional de Tango de Buenos Aires organizado por el Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Congreso Internacional de Tango Argentino (C.I.T.A) 2003 y 2004. De formación antropóloga, su trabajo como docente se caracteriza por la investigación y enseñanza de un lenguaje milonguero que aprendió y aprende bailando en las mejores milongas de Buenos Aires, aunque hoy en día dedica tiempo a disfrutar de la alegría de ser madre. Homenaje a Carlos Gavito En 2010 Maria Plazaola dictará un curso de 2 clases trabajando la material de Carlos Gavito (1942—2005). María fue pareja de baile y amiga de Gavito. Comentó lo siguiente acerca de su decisión de homenajearlo durante Milongueuando 2010: Desde que Gavito se fue “de gira sin mi” muchas veces me pregunté qué hacer con todo el legado que él me había regalado. Al principio fue muy difícil, lo extrañaba mucho, me preocupaba que mi trabajo quedara relacionado solamente con su nombre y no me sentía cómoda al trabajar con su baile sin él. Después, supongo que el tiempo ayudó mucho, fui encontrando un montón de mensajes que hicieron que me autorizara a mí misma. Gavito estaba muy ansioso los últimos años en trasmitir –casi con desesperación– todo su baile y sobretodo su filosofía de tango. Si bien yo no puedo siquiera aproximarme a eso como lo hubiera hecho él pienso que por algo me formó. Si algo lo caracterizaba era su generosidad en un sentido amplio y yo no quiero quedarme para mi sola con todo lo que él me regaló, me gustaría poder trasmitirlo a quienes les interese y a veces me siento con esa responsabilidad. La propuesta de estas clases es poder realizarle un homenaje ya que en el 2010 se cumplirán cinco años desde que se fue. Para eso la idea es desarrollar un programa basado en trabajar sobre su técnica, muy útil para corregir cualquier tipo de tango ya que trabaja sobre el equilibrio, la línea y la postura. Trabajar sobre sus secuencias mas típicas que nos ayudan a entrar en una forma diferente de escuchar la música para después bailarla e interpretarla, y sumergirnos en el universo de la pausa. Y por último poder apreciar su filosofía particular sobre el tango más allá de la danza, que nos permite pensar el tango de otra manera. La idea es trabajar apoyándonos también con material audiovisual de clases y exhibiciones que hice con él así como sus comentarios recopilados en el libro “Yo quería bailar” de Ricardo Plazaola. Con la esperanza de que él, en algún lugar, esté contento con el resultado y de que su “duende” se meta un poquito en el cuerpo de cada uno de nosotros!
